Full Story:In 1820 Faziabad,the testimony of Ameeran's father had led to the imprisonment of corrupt officer Dilawar Khan. With a view to get even,Dilawar Khan abducts the now eight year-old Ameeran for ransom. When none arrives,he sells her to a whorehouse in Lucknow,ran under the headship of Khannum Jaan. There,Ameeran,now christened as Umrao Jaan,learns to sing and dance. Years later,following an adoption,Umrao Jaan is now a famous courtesan with the voice of a nightingale and the musings of a poetess. While performing in the courts of Nawab Sujat Ali Khan,Umrao Jaan and the Nawab's son - Nawab Sultan - fall in love,against royal approval. Thus commences the duo foray into various obstacles.
