Dogman, by Luc Besson, was probably the movie whose makers were most interested in what the press thought after the first press showing. The dark movie stars Caleb Landry Jones and about 70 dogs. It has been called the director’s “comeback” by the media.
It is his first feature film since 2019’s “Anna” and his first since his career took a turn after he was accused of rape and cleared by a French judge last year.
But Besson doesn’t feel that way about Dogman. When THR asked if Dogman was his comeback movie, he said, “You don’t think like that.” He said that he just keeps working in the hopes that his ideas are good enough to keep getting turned into movies.
“It’s hard to be 60 because you don’t know how long you have left. He knows because he has a Chronometer. “But with an artist, you never know,” he replied. “I don’t want to make too many of the same movie, because then people will say, “Oh, he was good before.” So you try to figure out if you still have something to say. For now, I’m good. So I might have another one or two.”

“I don’t want to make too many of the same movie, because then people will say, “Oh, he was good before.” So you try to figure out if you still have something to say. For now, I’m good. So I might have another one or two.” Dogman has some of the same action and humor as Besson’s other movies.
But many people have pointed out that, at least with Landry Jones’ character, the movie pushes Besson into darker, more emotional territory, which he said was the result of his growing as a director.
“I made my first movie when I was 19, and now I’m 63. It’s taken me 50 years to get the focus, and I think I can describe myself a little better and maybe know what I want to say a little better, so it’s a natural process. I try to be more interesting, though. Still, I don’t think it’s dark. It seems like a lot of fun to me.”
