“Nobody picks up a guitar to be the most hated band in the world,” says member Ryan Peake in the new documentary Hate to Love: Nickelback, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. “It doesn’t make me feel good.”
Peake’s kids agree, and you can hear them quickly talking about how the band’s answer made them feel in the movie. “Everyone hated the band,” says Dax, Peake’s son. So, no one really liked us. Mike Kroeger, who is the brother of star singer Chad Kroeger, says, “It really sucked in the beginning.”
The movie shows some hard facts about the Canadian band, like how the internet was full of jokes about everything from the band’s music to Chad’s hair. Mike also says that his brother has “thin skin,” and when the teasing first started, it hurt him a lot.
