The Harder They Fall is an epic story about a man in the Bible who wants to be one of the Messiah’s disciples. Samuel says, “I wanted to tell a Bible story about a regular person.” The Book of Clarence puts Black characters at the center of Jay-Z, thanks to a demanding performance by Clarence and a supporting group that includes Teyana Taylor.
In Samuel says, “Clarence is a person who doesn’t believe in anything other than what he can see and hear.” “Clarence believes in himself a lot; he has a lot of faith in himself. He is sure that he could fly. He reminds me of how I was when I was young, but unlike me, he doesn’t believe in anything.
I think it’s really interesting to look at what it was like for him to live in that time and place, where most of the people around him talked about the Messiah. As a producer, Jay-Z was most worried that people would “immediately just focus on the religious aspect of it and not the human story,” he says.
The Book of Clarence Is a Pompous Journey Back to the Biblical Era
Beckwourth, played by RJ Cyler, says about halfway through Jeymes Samuel’s 2021 revenge Western The Harder They Fall, “As it says in the Book of Clarence, ‘No man out-speeds me.'” “Out-speed isn’t a word, and Clarence isn’t a book,” says another character.
Clarence is not in the Bible, that much is true. But for Samuel, the Book of Clarence was very real, and this short line of conversation, which was mostly ignored at the time, was his way of telling the world that the Book of Clarence would come to be.
The British director’s first feature-length movie was called “The Harder They Fall.” He already knew that his next movie would be “The Book of Clarence,” a biblical-era epic about a man who wants to be one of the Messiah’s disciples. In his first talk about the movie, Samuel tells Vanity Fair, “I wanted to tell a Bible story about an average person.”
“I’ve always wanted to look at Bible stories from the point of view of the woman or man who owns the hair salon and sells Jesus his sandals.” Tristar plans to release The Book of Clarence in theaters on January 12. It has an all-star cast, including LaKeith Stanfield as Clarence, who gives a demanding performance, and Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, and Teyana Taylor, who all play supporting roles.
Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and John the Baptist all show up in this big story, but each one has a surprising twist. Like in The Harder They Fall, writer-director Samuel puts Black characters at the center of Clarence, breaking another classic Hollywood movie genre with a new take that is funny and has a lot of heart.
“Most stories about the Old West didn’t have black people in them. We know that they were real.
