What Happened in the Lioness Finale?
In eight episodes, Special Ops: Lioness provided a nuanced examination of American intelligence operations, fusing the partisan politics of CIA scaremongering with the clandestine business judgments that frequently shape public opinion. Cruz, the central character, is profoundly affected by the overseas operations of the United States on all fronts. Her mission over the past two decades has been to infiltrate the family of the most perilous financier in the Middle East in terms of terrorism. His demise would result in a triumph for the United States—another global power-player transformed into an adversary by its monster-making engine in the war on terror. However, Lioness is also unafraid to cast doubt on one question: Who truly benefits from the demise of this individual? Have we truly achieved another triumph in this special operations conflict, or have our deeds merely provoked further disorder and bloodshed?
As she makes her way to the nuptials in the series-ending scene, Cruz does ultimately encounter the antagonist. Despite the fact that his daughter, Aaliyah, is about to wed, she attempts to maintain their relationship. The betrothed begins the celebrations by issuing a threat to “throw her into the sea.” Cruz is unable to be extracted from this mission without engaging in combat; therefore, she must either murder her target or place a tracker on him in order to accomplish the objective at hand. You are free to speculate as to which one would be more thrilling. Kaitlyn and Byron, back in the situation room, are irrationally preoccupied with “how the f**k we get her out.”
Upon the villain’s eventual appearance, Cruz is discovered to be in a vulnerable state. She attempts to conceal the fact that she has her head in the freezer in an attempt to remain composed by claiming she was “looking for water.” When the groom discovers Cruz’s identity and dashes in, exclaiming, “You’re a f*cking United States marine!” Cruz is compelled to unleash her murderous inclinations. She escapes on the beach after knocking the betrothed unconscious and stabbing Aaliayah’s father to death with a kitchen knife. A firefight ensues, but the CIA extracts her without incident.
The mission has achieved success, in any interpretation that may have. The situation room is enraged immediately following the news of his demise, stating, “You have set back Middle Eastern relations by four decades.” Director Byron feels perplexed. “If you wanted him alive, you should have taken him off the list,” he asserts. “Don’t give me shit because we did our fucking job.” Cruz, who recently experienced a traumatic homicide, shares the same emotions. “Joe, observe what you have created out of me.” “He was an old man, and I killed him in his fucking underwear.” Joe endeavors to remind Cruz that, in the estimation of American intelligence, she has just eliminated “one of the most heinous offenders of violence in the last two decades.” Cruz, however, no longer feels as though she has “saved lives.” She informs Joe, “Oil prices were the only thing we altered.” A biting sound. The credit is given.
